IPL 2023: Happy with Mumbai Indians win, Rohit Sharma heaps praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma praised Yashasvi Jaiswal, saying he was surprised with the power the youngster packed in his strokes, while also adding that it was heartening to see his team chase down a big total set by Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai on Sunday.
Jaiswal hit 16 fours and 8 sixes off 62 balls in a blazing 124-run knock that helped the Royals score 212/7, but still lost the match by six wickets with three deliveries to spare.

Rohit indicated he saw in Jaiswal the potential to make it to the India side.

"I watched him (Jaiswal) last year, he's taken it to the next level. I asked him 'where did you get the power from'. He said he's been going to the gym, that's good for him, India and RR," Rohit said at the post-match presentation.

"When I completed my century, I didn't know whether the ball went to the boundary. So I thanked God for everything. That was the highlight. Days like this definitely can happen. I want to focus on the process and work hard, and have the belief. I have been positive and am maintaining a good, fit lifestyle which is helping. The straight drive is my straight drive," said Jaiswal.
Rohit said he was happy with the way the team went about its task of chasing the big total.
"Was pleasing to see how we chased down the target. Last game too, we came close and we back ourselves to chase them down. So it was pleasing. Tim (David) has got a lot of ability and power. At the back end that helps and is good to have."
The skipper also said that Jofra Archer returning to the side and bowling full tilt was a big positive.

"Jofra's had a massive injury, with bowlers we knew they need match practice. But his pace was a big positive and we thought Sky's innings like that was around the corner."
Royals skipper Sanju Samson conceded Suryakumar Yadav and Tim David took the match away from them at the Wankhede Stadium.
Suryakumar Yadav's half-century (55 off 29 balls) and a 62-run unbeaten stand between Tim David (45 not out off 14 balls) and Tilak Varma (29 not out off 21) proved to be decisive.
West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder was the most expensive of the Royals bowlers conceding 55 runs in just 3.3 overs at an economy nearing 16 runs per over.

Jaiswal ton in vain; David blitz powers MI to record win

Tim David's 45* off 14 powered Mumbai Indians to the highest successful chase at the Wankhede Stadium, rendering Yashasvi Jaiswal's maiden IPL hundred earlier in the day in vain. It was one of the few records notched up on a milestone night in Mumbai that witnessed IPL's 1000th game (seven washed out contests not included) in action.

When Suryakumar got out, MI needed 58 runs off 26 balls. Despite the dew, it was a tricky phase of play for the hosts because Tilak Varma wasn't batting at his absolute best. Luckily, he had Tim David's experience at the end. RR's decision to bowl out Trent Boult by the 18th over gave them two clear overs to make the required 32 runs. Sandeep Sharma bowled the penultimate over but conceded a six and a four. All that before Jason Holder conceded three consecutive sixes off the first three balls of the final over, defusing what was shaping to be a very tight finish.

That RR, in fact, had opted to bat first on what's essentially a chasing ground, and racked up 212/7 in response. It was a total built around Yashasvi Jaiswal's one-man show but MI had more than one batter chipping in with useful cameos. While Cameron Green made 44 off 26, Suryakumar scored 55 off 29 and Varma did his bit with a tinfoil innings of 29* off 21. And the dew that fell ensured that batting got progressively easier and RR clearly didn't have the buffer runs in place.

Was it a dry pitch by Wankhede standards? Maybe. Did it look like that when Jaiswal was batting? No. Such was the nature of his innings. Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, Devdutt Padikkal, Jason Holder and Shimron Hetmyer combined to score only 53 runs on the surface, with extras being the second highest run-getter in the innings, but Jaiswal was unstoppable on the night and scored 16 fours and 8 sixes all around the park. It was as if he was batting at home.

It all started with a hooked six against Cameron Green in the first over. An encore against Jofra Archer in the next over followed, and by the time Riley Meredith came on to bowl the fifth over of the Powerplay, Jaiswal was on song, hitting the fast bowler for four boundaries in the over. And as the day would have it, he got to his hundred with another pull off Meredith, becoming the fourth youngest player to make an IPL hundred. And by the end of it, he had the highest individual score by an uncapped player in IPL.
